The Inova childbirth experience
Our four birthing centers in Northern Virginia welcome more than 18,000 babies each year. Patient safety and support during the childbirth experience are our top priorities. Every hospital has a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with access to Inova Children's Level IV NICU in Fairfax for higher-level care if necessary. Inova’s collaborative teams are here for you at every stage — from your first pregnancy visit, to antenatal testing, to childbirth classes, through labor and delivery and your hospital stay, and into your postpartum months. Our teams are experienced, friendly and passionate about caring for you and your newborn.
All of our hospitals have achieved Magnet status indicating the highest level of care for patients and satisfaction for nurses.
Choosing a childbirth provider
You can choose an obstetrics and gynecology physician (OB-GYN) or a certified nurse midwife (CNM) to guide you through your pregnancy and help you through your delivery. For high-risk pregnancies, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist will help manage your pregnancy and in some very high-risk cases may also attend your delivery.

Antenatal testing center
Each hospital features antenatal testing centers for screening tests, ultrasound evaluations as well as needed therapeutic procedures during pregnancy. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists, known as perinatologists, work as a team with our staff of expert perinatal nurses to assist obstetricians or nurse-midwives by offering specialized services and compassionate care to mothers and their unborn babies, from pre-pregnancy counseling through delivery.
