Transforming care through bold ideas
Each year, team members across Inova Schar Heart and Vascular submit innovative proposals aimed at improving patient care, strengthening operations and advancing cardiovascular care. Philanthropy makes it possible to bring many of these ideas to life.
This year, we’re sharing updates on previously approved projects, while new 2026 proposals continue through final review.
AI-Enhanced Imaging
Using artificial intelligence to strengthen diagnosis
This multi-team initiative, led by Dr. Ana Barac, continues to advance AI-powered approaches to analyzing echocardiographic images.
Supported by funding from the Markey family as well as grateful patient Melanie Stinnett the team is building an Inova-specific system that improves detection and characterization of complex conditions such as amyloidosis and valvular disease.
Why it matters:
- Supports faster, more accurate image interpretation
- Enhances ability to identify patients with complex cardiac conditions
- Advances a foundational diagnostic tool across Inova Schar Heart and Vascular
Reducing Waste to Improve Care
A practical innovation with immediate impact
One approved project focused on reducing waste within clinical environments — particularly the heavy reliance on disposable plastics.
Launched in 2023 as a volunteer-led initiative by Ehsan Javadi with support from Clinical Director Stephanie Hancock BSN, RN, CNML, NE-BC, the Waste Control Project began on a single unit and has since expanded across Inova Schar Heart and Vascular.
Through thoughtful redesign and coordinated workflow improvements, this effort has already resulted in meaningful cost savings and a more sustainable approach to care delivery.
Sustainability Impact:
- As of July 2025, Inova Schar Heart and Vascular has an estimated cost savings of $370,000 compared to the same period in 2024
- An estimated 9.3 tons of medical supplies have been diverted from landfills
- Total estimated avoided emissions: 15.8 metric tons
Coordinated Discharge Experience
Helping patients leave the hospital with clarity and confidence
Another great idea made possible through Schar funding aimed to improve how patients transition out of the hospital, ensuring they understand their care plan and have streamlined access to follow-up support. This includes developing clear, consistent discharge instructions and improving coordination through Epic.
Why it matters:
- Strengthens continuity of care
- Reduces avoidable confusion, calls and readmissions
- Enhances patients’ and families’ experience at a vulnerable moment

We are excited to continue activating donor funds to support innovation at Inova.
Final decisions for the next round of proposals are expected soon, and they will be highlighted in next year’s report to donors.
