Lobster Extravaganza
This beloved annual event hosted by the Peterson family marked its 24th anniversary in 2024. Last year, your efforts helped raise more than $1M in support of Peterson Life with Cancer, and we greatly appreciate our donors and sponsors.
October Saves Goalie Challenge
As one of our valued partners and supporters, the October Saves Goalie Challenge brought together hockey players of all ages to save lives and make saves in support of winning against cancer. Over the years, these young athletes have raised a cumulative total of $1.5M for women's cancer research, the Saville Center mobile screening bus and Peterson Life with Cancer Pediatric Program.

PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY
A legacy of cancer care: the impact of Team Mathias
Expanding access to world-class pediatric cancer treatment is a priority and we are grateful to have the enduring support of Team Mathias. Ten years ago, Mathias Giordano passed away from osteosarcoma. As a patient, he was determined to advocate for other children by increasing awareness and raising money for more treatment options.
To recognize Mathias and his vision, pediatric and teen exam rooms 12a and 12b in the Inova Mather Proton Therapy Center and exam room 12 at the Fairfax Pediatric Emergency Department have been named in his honor, harnessing the power of philanthropy to continue his spirit of advocacy.
Young lives, brave hearts: cancer care for teens and young adults
Thanks to the generosity of donors like the Elizabeth Ann Healy Foundation, Team Mathias and the Northern Virginia Orthodontics (NVO) Foundation, more young patients have access to innovative, effective cancer care when they need it most. This includes Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA)—an often-overlooked group between the ages of 15 and 39 facing unique challenges.
To better support AYA patients, our Pediatric Oncology team offers specialized care tailored to their distinct needs, which can include fertility preservation, returning to school or work, financial concerns and caring for young families. Depending on their diagnosis, some AYAs receive treatment at pediatric cancer centers, while others benefit from welcoming, age-appropriate spaces designed to provide comfort and connection. The Mathias Family Lounge offers a supportive environment for patients of all ages, while the Elizabeth Ann Healy Teen Lounge creates a dedicated space where teens can relax, recharge and connect with peers.

"With great hospital systems, comes equally meaningful philanthropic commitment, and not by coincidence. To realize our vision for world-class healthcare for our communities, we rely on philanthropic partners. With their support, and the shared efforts of our wider community, we look forward to achieving this goal, together."
- J. Stephen Jones, MD, FACS, President and CEO, Inova

The road ahead
Thanks to your support, we took a major step forward in expanding our outstanding clinical oncology services with the groundbreaking of a new hospital campus in Alexandria in September 2024, which will feature a state-of-the-art 100,000 square foot cancer center. Opening in 2028, this exciting undertaking demonstrates our shared commitment—yours and ours—to ensuring that neighbors throughout Northern Virginia have access to the transformative cancer care they need for generations to come.
