Early detection and prevention saves lives!
Prevention research
- 456 patients enrolled in 7 clinical research studies
- Selected as one of 8 national prevention research hubs in the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Screening Research Network
- NCI Vanguard study launching in late 2025 will evaluate several Multi-Cancer Detection tests.
- Conducted a pilot study on the effectiveness of cancer screening for firefighters in our region, who face a higher cancer risk. As part of the firefighter multi-disciplinary screening, 30 firefighters received VECTRA screenings. This study set the stage for a 4-year study of 800 firefighters launched in 2025.
- Laid the groundwork and developed the protocol for a 3-year study launching in late 2025, involving 100 active and retired military personnel exposed to burn pits. Limited research has been conducted on the link between burn pit exposure and cancer risk in veterans. With initial support from the Northrop Grumman Foundation, this study will assess the feasibility of more intensive cancer screenings.

"We are in dire need of new tools to detect more types of cancer at earlier, more treatable stages. We are thrilled to be part of the NCI’s effort to bring the promise of novel techniques for cancer screening to the people of Virginia through this important collaboration."
- Rebecca Kaltman, MD Executive Director, Inova Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center and co-principal investigator of the study
Disease-specific research
- Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Consortium (PRECEDE)
- BRCA2 (breast cancer associated genes) melanoma study with VECTRA 360
- Nasal swab study to detect lung cancer
- Ovarian cancer risk reduction in women with BRCA1 mutations
RUNNING AGAINST TIME: GI CANCER CONNECTION FOR ULTRAMARTATHON RUNNERS
Tim Cannon, MD, Sheridan Director, Molecular Tumor Board and Co-Director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program, concluded a study earlier this year examining whether endurance athletes are more likely to develop colorectal cancer. The study included 100 ultramarathon runners aged 35 to 50.

"As both a researcher and an avid runner, this study is deeply personal to me. We’re uncovering critical links between endurance running and colorectal cancer risk—insights that could change how we approach screening and prevention for athletes, like me. This research isn’t just about data; it’s about protecting the health of both athletes and the community alike."

Meeting people where they are: new Inova mobile screening
- Showing up with a sneak peek at our 2024 Inova Honors event, the Inova Mobile Screening bus officially hit the road in early 2025, bringing the Saville Center’s life-saving prevention services directly to the community.
- Initially launched by a generous gift from Sandi and Jerry Croan and bolstered by the generous support of the Marian Greenblatt Fund, Kent and Margo LaMotta, ALARM.COM and many other donors, the bus expands access to lifesaving cancer screenings, ensuring more people in underserved communities receive critical preventive care.
- Your continued support provides free mammograms, Pap tests, fecal immunochemical tests (FIT kits) for colon cancer screening, skin cancer screenings, cardiac health screenings, patient education and outreach, genetic counseling referrals and clinical trial enrollment.

"Our family is proud to support Inova’s mobile screening efforts because everyone deserves access to life-saving cancer screenings—no matter where they live or what barriers they face."

3rd Annual Saville Center Community Health Fair
- More than 750 people attended our third annual Saville Center event in May for free early detection, prevention, and wellness resources, including cancer and heart screenings
- 77 FIT kits were distributed, and 147 skin cancer checks were conducted with 29 of those checks resulting in referrals for biopsy
